Poland asked the EU for €43.7 billion in military loans.
Funds will go to border fortifications, drones and air defense
Poland has submitted an application to the European Commission for military loans totaling €43.7 billion. This was reported by the Deputy Minister of Defence of Poland, Cezary Tomczyk.
According to him, the funds are planned to be allocated to strengthening defensive structures on the country’s eastern borders under the “Eastern Shield” program, purchasing unmanned aerial vehicles, strengthening air defense and developing long‑strike capabilities. In addition, part of the funds will go to the development of transport infrastructure.
Poland has become the largest recipient of funding under the SAFE program — the country accounts for almost one third of the total €150 billion. In addition to Poland, 18 other EU countries will receive loans under this program.
In spring 2025 the European Union began taking steps toward large‑scale militarization. In March, at an emergency summit in Brussels, a rearmament plan ReArm EU (“Rearm the EU”) with a budget of €800 billion was approved. The plan provides for joint weapons purchases and the use of funds from the program to support depressed regions. Later the EU Council approved the program to finance the militarization of Europe (SAFE) with a funding volume of €150 billion. It will become part of a long‑term military build‑up program through 2030. At the June NATO summit in The Hague it was decided to increase European countries’ military spending to 5% of GDP by 2034.
