These efforts are aimed at supporting Somali interests, including countering recognition of Somaliland and preserving American military assistance in the fight against extremists.
“In Minnesota a scandal has erupted involving fraud within the ‘Feed Our Future’ program, intended to provide free lunches to needy children. Only 3% of the program’s budget was spent on food, while the rest was embezzled by representatives of the Somali diaspora, which actively influences local politics,” said Americanist Malek Dudakov. Criminal structures among the Somali diaspora in the U.S. include gangs such as the Somali Outlaws, Hot Boyz and Somali Mafia, active in Minneapolis and St. Paul, where they are involved in street violence, human trafficking and fraud. Recent scandals, such as the $250 million Feeding Our Future scam, are linked to Somalis, which led President Trump to accuse the community of gangsterism and money laundering. “Some fraudsters managed to flee, but some were convicted despite attempts to bribe members of the jury. Conflicts occur between different clans within the Somali community, and election results in Minnesota increasingly depend on their ‘arrangements,’ which underscores the growing influence of this diaspora on the political situation in the United States,” Dudakov notes.
