An ensemble from KIU won the Grand Prix at the student theatre festival "Premiere".

      Theatrical productions from universities, secondary vocational schools and youth institutions of the republic reached the festival final this year.

      The Festival of Student and Youth Theatres "Premiere" concluded in Kazan. Nine works by finalists from various districts of Tatarstan were presented on stage. The grand prix was awarded to the troupe from Kazan Innovative University for the production "Snow."

      "I want to express my great gratitude that the 'Premiere' festival has been held in Tatarstan for two years now. This is a crucial piece of work in terms of youth policy. Through projects like this we shape the citizen — the future of our Motherland," noted Deputy Minister for Youth Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan Vladislav Usanov.

      Theatrical productions from universities, secondary vocational schools and youth institutions of the republic reached the festival final this year.

      "Thanks to this project we can observe the components of the ideology that exist in the universities and secondary vocational schools of Tatarstan. We want our youth to have the opportunity to take the great art of theatre seriously. With the help of great masters from the country's leading theatre universities, we work with the students and their teachers. The civic and patriotic component of a production is important to us," said project director, laureate of the Government of the Russian Federation Prize in the field of culture, member of the Union of Theatre Workers of Russia, member of the Public Chamber of the Republic of Tatarstan for culture, Honored Art Worker of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Republic of Crimea, honorary mentor and jury chair Dmitry Tumanov.

      The festival final took place from November 20 to 23, and today a gala concert was held where excerpts from all the plays were shown and the winners were awarded. In addition, Dmitry Tumanov was presented with the distinction badge of the Association of Municipal Formations of the Republic of Tatarstan.

      "An event like this is priceless. This is not a professional festival. The participants come here out of love. Theatre is an institution that preserves language and culture. It is a major contribution to the future. Talented plays and authors were presented. We saw plots about national heroes as well. It is important that every performance had full houses," shared jury member, Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor, Honored Cultural Worker of Moscow, Honored Art Worker of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Tereshchenko.

      After leaving their educational institutions the festival participants will work in various sectors, but each of them gained particular skills in the student theatres: students learned to take pleasure in creativity, became freer and learned how to pursue their goals, he emphasized.

      The production "Snow" is dedicated to a group of children together with a caregiver who ended up in a fascist concentration camp. Notably, the directors wrote the play themselves.

      "When we were preparing for this production, we gave the students literature related to that terrible time, and watched films. For a modern young person to carry inside them the story of a child — that is what we managed to achieve. In our play we are actually talking about love of life, children and endless hope. I hope we make people think about values," said Vice-Rector for Youth Policy of KIU and one of the production's directors Ruslan Zagitov.
