The suspension of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva expires on December 25, 2025 — from that day the athlete will again have the right to participate in official competitions.
The scandal involving the native of Kazan erupted in February 2022 during the Beijing Olympic Games. During the competition, a positive result from Valieva’s doping test taken back in December 2021 became known. The sample contained the drug trimetazidine.
The situation caused enormous resonance. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Skating Union (ISU) demanded the athlete’s suspension. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) allowed Valieva to continue competing at the Olympics but stripped the ROC team of the gold in the team event. After that, there was a long investigation into the degree of the athlete’s guilt and possible sanctions. In January 2024 CAS issued a final decision. The court found Valieva guilty of violating anti-doping rules, disqualified her for four years (from December 25, 2021 to December 24, 2025) and annulled results shown after December 2021, including the 2022 European Championship gold.
Despite the long break, Kamila Valieva is methodically preparing to resume her competitive career. In October the 19-year-old athlete fully returned to training, making an unexpected choice in favor of a new coaching staff: she now works under the guidance of Svetlana Sokolovskaya at Tatiana Navka’s school. This was a noticeable change — before the disqualification the skater trained in the famed group of Eteri Tutberidze.
By the end of November Valieva demonstrated the seriousness of her intentions: she not only regained her form but also began active work on new programs, paying special attention to polishing elements. Such a pace of preparation clearly shows that the athlete is aiming for a full return to the elite of women’s singles skating.
However, the path back to top-level sport will likely not be easy. Rules have changed during the suspension, competitors have improved, and psychological pressure remains high.
The sports world is watching closely: will Kamila be able to recover her former form and fight for top honors? So far she has not had major victories — the World Championships, the Grand Prix Final and the Olympic singles competitions have eluded her.
