      In the folk calendar, December 25 is the Day of Remembrance of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous, who among the people was called Spyridon the Sun-Turn. This name is connected with the fact that around the end of December the daylight begins to increase little by little, and in ancient times it was believed that from this moment the Sun once again gained strength.

      Traditions: Meeting the dawn. It was believed that to properly observe Spyridon's day one should rise before sunrise, go to a high place and "greet" the first rays. Ritual loaves. Housewives baked round loaves resembling the Sun in shape. Such a treat was placed in the center of the table or raised to the window to meet the dawn. It was believed that with the bread warmth and abundance entered the home. Prayer. Believers went to the church to pray to the saint for help in life matters, prosperity, and the health of relatives and loved ones. Amulets. To protect themselves and their homes from evil forces, people made various charms. For example, women stuck a sickle into the door jamb, and men an axe into the threshold. Cherry-branch divination. In some villages they cut a cherry branch and put it in a pot of water. If it blossomed by Christmas, the year was promised to be fruitful.

      Prohibitions: It was forbidden to go into the forest without need — it was believed that a bear in its den could awaken from a person's steps, and to disturb an animal on the day when nature "turns" toward a new cycle would bring misfortune. It was not recommended to set out on a long journey without extreme necessity — the journey could turn into delays, losses and troubles. Lying, making empty promises, getting into quarrels and arguing were forbidden — this "closed" the way to the help of the saints and attracted misfortunes. It was not permitted to engage in heavy physical labor, cleaning, handicrafts, or laundry.
