Russia has introduced a GOST on the safety of tubing slides.

      Russia has approved a new national standard for the safety of tubing slides. Rosstandart reported this.

      The new GOST for the first time establishes comprehensive requirements specifically for tubing slides — one of the most popular types of winter and leisure equipment. Previously applicable standards only covered general requirements for playgrounds.

      The agency noted that the need to develop the GOST arose due to the active development of infrastructure for children's and family recreation and the wide spread of tubing slides. Such structures are installed both indoors and on open sites, and their use is associated with an increased risk of injuries.

      The new standard details requirements for the design of slides, their installation, operation and maintenance. The document specifies parameters for descent tracks, run-outs, fences, protective systems, braking zones, as well as requirements for materials and surfacing. Separate requirements are defined for the tubes themselves and their labeling. Special attention is paid to reducing the risks of falls, collisions and loss of control.

      The GOST also creates uniform rules for manufacturers, operating organizations and regulatory authorities.

      Tatyana Butskaya, first deputy chair of the State Duma Committee on the Protection of the Family, Paternity, Maternity and Childhood, emphasized that the introduction of the standard is an important step for the protection of children.

      “Unfortunately, over recent winters we have often seen horrible news in the media about children being killed, being thrown onto roadways because they rode on unequipped hills while tubing. The GOST provides that all tubes and tubing slides will be classified, and they will receive appropriate markings. A specific type of tube will be permitted for each type of tubing slide,” she said.
