The Interior Ministry recommended that drivers renew their licenses in advance if they expire during the New Year holidays.

      The Ministry of Internal Affairs warned motorists that they need to timely renew driver’s licenses whose validity expires during the winter holidays, since the automatic extension procedure will end on December 31, 2025.

      The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia urged drivers whose driver’s licenses expire during the New Year holidays to take care of replacing the documents in good time, before the start of the holidays. This was reported by the RIA Novosti agency. The reason for the urgency is due to changes in legislation. Driver’s licenses whose validity ended in the period from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025 inclusive were automatically extended for three years. However, licenses that expire in the very first days of 2026 will not be subject to such an extension.

      Because branches of the State Traffic Inspectorate operate on reduced hours or are completely closed during the holiday period, drivers with invalid licenses risk being outside the law until the agencies resume work.

      The ministry emphasized that replacement of a driver’s license is carried out according to the standard procedure and does not require retaking exams. Drivers whose licenses were extended automatically will be able to use the document for another three years beyond the previously indicated term.
