UNICS claimed a come-from-behind victory over MBA-MAI in Moscow in a VTB United League regular-season game, 90:84.
The men from Kazan faced very serious roster problems in this game. First, injured Mikhail Belenitsky, Andrey Lopatin, Paris Lee and C.J. Bryce were not included in the squad. Second, Denis Zakharov suffered an injury in the first half and played out the rest of the game with it. Finally, UNICS finished the game without leaders Alexey Shved, Jalen Reynolds and Marcus Bingham. Each of them picked up five fouls and left the game early.
It was no surprise that MBA took advantage of the situation and started the fourth quarter leading 68:62. Approaching the end, the Kazan side managed to regain the lead. The referees “evened” the game by disqualifying MBA head coach Vasily Karasev with one and a half minutes remaining: outraged by the referee's decision, he ran onto the court. Karasev finished watching the game from the stands.
In total UNICS had eight players take the court in this match, and all of them logged more than 17 minutes of playing time except Ivan Belousov (he had 6). DeShon Pierre played 32 minutes, Dmitry Kulagin — 37, meaning he rested only three. It was Kulagin who produced his most productive game of the season, scoring 27 points.
UNICS remains in second place in the standings. UNICS's next game will be in Yekaterinburg. The team will play the local Uralmash on December 28 at 14:30.
