Media: Martial law imposed in Iranian cities amid unrest — Trump threatened authorities with intervention
Martial law has been imposed in several cities in Iran due to mass unrest sweeping the country. This is reported by Sputnik Belarus citing local media. According to The Wall Street Journal, at least five people have died during the unrest. Fars reports three dead and 17 injured.
The Guardian reports that the protests in Iran have turned into a "battlefield." It is noted that the unrest has become the largest in the country in the past three years.
The situation was commented on in the social network Truth Social by U.S. President Donald Trump. He suggested that Washington might intervene: "If Iran shoots and brutally kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their aid. We are ready to act."
Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Ministry urged "hot heads" to refrain from escalation around Iran. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova asked not to repeat "the fatal mistakes that were made in June 2025 and led to a serious undermining of the IAEA’s verification activities in Iran."
In late December, mass protests erupted in Iran against the backdrop of a drop in the value of the local currency — the Iranian rial. It reached historic lows on the unofficial market. Initially, traders and shop owners in Tehran went out to the rally, closing their outlets. Later, other residents of the country also joined the protests.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on the government to heed the "legitimate demands" of the protesters. He instructed the interior minister to hold a dialogue with the protesters and to use all available capacity to resolve the problems.
Against the backdrop of the protests, the head of Iran’s central bank, Mohammad Farzin, resigned. The new head of the regulator will be Abdol Naser Hemmati, who served as minister of economy and previously headed the central bank.
