Folk omens for January 3, 2026
On January 3 in the Orthodox tradition the memory of Saint Peter is observed; among the people he was venerated as a miracle-worker and protector.
In Rus' this day acquired the name Peter Polukorm — by that time winter supplies had noticeably dwindled and householders began to take stock of what remained. At the same time a leisurely preparation for Christmas was underway. Here we describe the omens, customs and prohibitions associated with this date.
Weather omens for January 3
Our ancestors watched nature closely, believing it warned in advance what the winter would be like and what to expect from the coming year. Frost and an icy coating on branches promise prolonged cold. A dense crust of snow in early January — a sign of an imminent thaw. A booming blizzard foretells a long winter. If a fox comes close to the dwelling — expect a snowstorm. A hare appearing in an open area during the day promises a sharp cold snap.
What people did on this day
January 3 was to be spent calmly and measuredly, laying foundations for the whole year. The morning began with washing in cold spring water — it was believed to protect against illnesses and strengthen health. Unmarried girls observed a special custom: during the day they tried to speak as little as possible. It was believed that silence hastened the meeting with a future husband. The day was recommended to be devoted to housework — by belief, the more one managed to tidy the home, the happier the coming year would be. Housewives on this day always descended to the cellars to check vegetables, pickles and jams. To protect grain from mice, two splinters of wood were placed across the sacks in a cross — such a sign was considered a reliable talisman. Preparations for Christmas also began: baking kalachi from semolina flour, perepechi and other festive pastries. For the protection of the home a silver item was placed in a visible place — it was believed this metal drove away evil forces and protected the family from the evil eye.
What was forbidden on January 3
Many prohibitions were associated with Peter Polukorm, and people tried to observe them strictly. It was not customary to wish someone wellbeing, health or wealth — it was believed that such words could turn into misfortune. One should not pick up found items, especially money: a find portended future losses. It was forbidden to be downhearted or complain — this could attract a string of troubles. Promises were not given and oaths not sworn: it was believed they would not be fulfilled. Heavy physical labor was avoided, so as not to work without rest all year.
Hair was not cut — it was believed that luck could be “cut off” along with it. People did not eavesdrop or peek, fearing punishment for meddling in someone else's life. On this day fish were not caught or eaten — it was believed this could anger water spirits. Peter Polukorm reminded people of thrift, attention to the home and respect for traditions which, according to ancestors' belief, helped preserve prosperity and harmony in the family.
