The Tatarstan Veterinary Department reminded people about the deadly danger beer poses to dogs.
Beer is dangerous for dogs; alcohol causes severe poisoning and death, and any amount of alcohol threatens a pet's life. This was reminded by the Main Directorate of Veterinary Medicine of the Cabinet of Ministers of Tatarstan.
Dogs must never drink beer, because alcohol is a powerful poison for them. It causes rapid and severe poisoning, which manifests as loss of coordination, vomiting, diarrhea, a drop in temperature and blood sugar levels. In severe cases, intoxication can lead to coma, organ failure and death, since a dog's body cannot metabolize ethanol.
Even an accidental sip is dangerous. If a dog has drunk beer, you must urgently contact a veterinarian, the agency emphasized.
Consequences of a dog consuming beer include:
– toxic effects (alcohol destroys the liver, kidneys and nerve cells);
– loss of coordination (staggering gait, loss of balance, inappropriate behavior);
– breathing problems (slowed breathing, respiratory failure);
– dehydration and intoxication (rapid dehydration and systemic intoxication);
– gastrointestinal disorders (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain);
– drops in temperature and sugar (dangerous lowering of body temperature and blood glucose levels);
– seizures and coma (in severe cases seizures, coma and death are possible).
There is no safe dose of alcohol for dogs, especially for small breeds, the Main Directorate of Veterinary Medicine stressed.
If you suspect that a dog has consumed alcohol, contact a veterinarian immediately, the agency added.
