A new telephone scam unfolded in Leninogorsk, resulting in the loss of a large sum: a woman “gifted” scammers 2.8 million rubles after deciding to buy a bed.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Tatarstan, a 23-year-old resident of the republic fell victim to fraudsters and lost 2.8 million rubles while attempting to buy a bed through an online store. It all began when the woman selected an item in the online shop. Soon she received a call from an unknown person who introduced himself as a delivery service courier. Under the pretext of processing the order he elicited her personal data and then sent a link that, he said, led to the “Gosuslugi” website. After that, a notification about an alleged authorization from a new device arrived in the victim’s email.
Frightened by the possibility of being hacked, the woman scrolled down the email and saw an icon for the “support hotline.” After calling the number shown, she was instructed to go to the support chat via the link from that same notification. In the messenger she was contacted by a person who claimed to be a security department employee. Under the pretext of protecting her savings from fraudsters, he convinced the woman to take out a bank loan and transfer all the funds to a special “secure account.” The victim followed all the instructions and only later realized she had been deceived. Investigators have opened a criminal case on the charge of “Fraud.”
Earlier, representatives of the district courts of Kazan warned residents that there has been an increase in calls from people posing as court officials. According to the source, the scammers’ aim is to obtain citizens’ confidential personal data or confirmation codes from SMS messages.
