The rarest and most common names that residents of the Republic of Tatarstan chose for their newborn children in 2025 have been revealed.

According to the statistics of the “Registry of Civil Status Acts” portal, among male names the most unusual and rarely encountered were Rakhimbek, Gabderakhim, Yeremey, Meteo Klod Midhat and Yamin. The list of the rarest female names included Rasima, Korolina, Khanzada, Giselle and Miel.

At the same time, last year parents in Tatarstan most often named boys Amir, Timur, Mark, Miron, Matvey and Mikhail. For girls the most popular choices were Amina, Aylin, Sofia, Yasmin and Emilia. The portal of the Unified State Register of Civil Status Acts provides an extensive directory that includes about five thousand names and takes into account the regional specifics of all subjects of Russia. In addition, when choosing a name parents can consult a special Tatar–Russian dictionary of personal names, patronymics and surnames which is posted on the website of the Civil Registry Office of the Republic of Tatarstan. Its purpose is to help parents with the correct spelling.

The republic plans to additionally create its own list of names so that when issuing a birth certificate parents can choose names not only for their sound but also for their meaning, and also correctly fill out documents with the correct form of spelling in the Tatar language.

How to choose a name? According to the data of the “Tatar-inform” portal, there are a number of restrictions when choosing a name for a child in the republic. A name cannot contain digits, alphanumeric designations, numerals, symbols and signs that are not letters (except for a hyphen), obscene words or indications of positions, titles and ranks. As for the surname, if the parents have the same surname, the child inherits it. If the parents have different surnames the child may receive either the father's or the mother's surname, although the father's surname is chosen more often. It is also permissible to give a double-barrelled surname composed of the father's and mother's surnames in any order, provided that it contains no more than two words connected by a hyphen. It was previously reported that new rules are being prepared in Tatarstan for issuing marriage permits to minors.
