The deputies of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan have adopted a law restricting the sale of gasoline to minors. Now only children who are 16 years old and have a driver's license will be able to purchase fuel.
Tatarstan has decided to legally prohibit the sale of automotive gasoline to minors. An exception will be made only for teenagers over 16 years old who already have a license to operate a vehicle – for example, a moped or motorcycle, the regional parliament's press service reported. The initiative was considered today in the State Council of Tatarstan. According to the chairwoman of the committee on social policy, Svetlana Zakharova, gas stations already try not to sell gasoline to teenagers, but now this ban will be officially established. Violators face serious fines: from 3,000 to 5,000 rubles for ordinary buyers, from 30,000 to 50,000 rubles for gas station employees, and from 100,000 to 150,000 rubles for the gas stations themselves. As the deputy noted, the bill is aimed at reducing child road traffic injuries. "The need for such a restriction is related to the increase in the number of children taking to public roads on motor vehicles that are not intended for use on highways. Children lack knowledge of safe driving or deliberately violate it," she emphasized. According to her, some gas stations in the region had already restricted the sale of fuel to minors, but this issue had not been regulated at the legislative level. The new rules are intended to stop a dangerous trend: over the past year, the number of accidents involving children on motorcycles has increased by 40%, and the number of fatalities has tripled, the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tatarstan clarified. They specified that since the beginning of 2024, there have been 15 accidents involving teenagers under 16 in Tatarstan.
