Against the backdrop of falling electricity prices in China, Russian energy exporters have lost an important market.
Photo: Svetlana Mulykina January 16 – IA SM.News. The cessation of electricity exports from Russia to China may be related to changes in supply and demand in the energy market, as well as political and economic factors affecting both countries. In the context of global energy instability and sanctions, Russia may reconsider its export strategies to optimize domestic resources.
"Since January 1, 2026, China has stopped importing electricity from Russia, freezing a long-term contract until 2037, which has become a symbol of the end of an era in economic relations between the two countries. The formal reason is that the export price exceeded China's domestic tariffs, but in reality, this reflects the systemic challenges facing Russian energy strategy," explains political scientist Ilya Graschenkov. The prospects for restoring electricity exports depend on improving relations between the countries and stabilizing the energy market. If Russia can adapt to new conditions and offer competitive terms to China, the resumption of supplies may become a reality in the future. "This case debunks myths about China as a bottomless market and long-term contracts as guarantees of stability. Russia is facing a transition from an export-raw materials model to a new paradigm where energy becomes critically important for domestic development, and significant investments in infrastructure and technology within the country are necessary for a successful 'turn to the East'," Graschenkov summarized.
Earlier, IA SM-NEWS reported that US control over Iranian and Venezuelan resources will allow the US to dominate in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.
