Forecaster Shuvakov: after the holidays, Tatarstan is expecting a severe cold snap.
The period of heavy snowfall in Tatarstan has ended. According to the forecast by the head of the "Meteo" forecasting center, Alexander Shuvalov, starting Thursday, there will be a significant drop in temperature in the region, associated with rising atmospheric pressure and the departure of cloud cover. "The sky will clear of clouds, there will be clear weather, and the frosts will gradually strengthen," the expert noted in a conversation with "Tatar-inform." According to his data, on Thursday, the temperature across the republic will drop to -11…-16°C, on Friday to -17…-19°C, and on Saturday and Sunday night, thermometers may fall to -20…-25°C, during the day to -15…-20°C. The first working week after the New Year holidays will be one of the coldest at the beginning of the year. The cold will affect not only Kazan but also major cities in the east of the republic, including Naberezhnye Chelny and Mendeleyevsk. Shuvalov emphasized that the intensification of frosts is not accidental — it is a natural preparation for Epiphany. "I would call these frosts Pre-Epiphany, because on Epiphany – January 19 – there will be a slight weakening of the frosts. It will be around minus 15 degrees, with possible light snow."
According to his assessment, January 19 will be a turning point: the frosts will recede a bit, and in some areas, light precipitation in the form of snow is possible, which corresponds to the folk tradition of "Epiphany frosts" — when the water in rivers and lakes becomes especially clean and transparent. The expert recommends that residents of the republic prepare in advance for the cold: insulate their homes, check heating systems, and avoid prolonged stays outdoors on windless but frosty nights — especially under clear skies.
