In the school cafeterias of Tatarstan, a system called "Smart Cafeteria" is planned to be implemented, which will fully automate the payment process in self-service areas.
Schools in Tatarstan are preparing to solve the main problem of long breaks – queues in cafeterias. The company ICL Services, together with the "Obr.Karta" platform, has developed a software complex "Smart Cafeteria," based on computer vision technologies and neural networks, which turns the purchase of lunch into a maximally quick process. This was reported by the Ministry of Digital Development of the Republic. The principle of operation of the system is extremely simple and does not require staff involvement. A student just needs to place the tray with the selected food in a special kiosk: cameras and artificial intelligence recognize all dishes – from soup to pastries – in 5–15 seconds. The list of products and the total amount are instantly displayed on the screen, after which the student only needs to tap their card for payment. Thus, self-service areas will relieve cafeteria staff and feed many more children during a short break. According to KazanFirst, the development was based on video analytics algorithms that are already successfully used in large retail. In particular, similar control systems from ICL Services are used in the "ASHAN" hypermarket chain at self-service checkouts, where the neural network helps avoid errors when scanning products and prevents theft. The first "smart cafeterias" are planned to be launched in some schools in Kazan as early as the next academic year. If the pilot project proves successful, this practice may be expanded throughout the republic. It was previously reported that in Kazan, based on a court decision, the activities of the Bosphor cafe, located in the central part of the city at 43 Moskovskaya Street, have been temporarily suspended. The reason for the unscheduled inspection was two notifications of cases of intestinal infection among visitors.
