Hero of the Soviet Union Nikolai Maikov: the feat of the pilot

The name of Nikolai Ivanovich Maikov holds a special place in the history of the country and the Zainsk district. In 2020, a street in the western part of the Vozdvizhenka microdistrict was named in his honor, symbolizing respect for the hero's feat and the preservation of historical memory. Nikolai Maikov was born on April 30, 1918, in Yaroslavl. In his childhood, he was left without parents and was moved to the village of Stary Tokmak, where he spent his school years. Here he completed seven grades and took his first steps towards his future profession.
His passion for technology and aviation led him to study at the factory and plant training school at the Yaroslavl locomotive repair plant, where he mastered the profession of a lathe operator. Later, he joined an aeroclub and then graduated from the Tambov Military Aviation School of Pilots.
With the onset of the Great Patriotic War, Maikov was sent to the front. Since 1942, he participated in combat operations as part of the bomber aviation. By November 1943, the Guards lieutenant had completed 68 combat sorties, destroying enemy forces and strategic targets.
For his courage and heroism, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on November 1, 1943. Nikolai Maikov was awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, Orders of the Patriotic War I and II class, as well as medals for the liberation of key cities.
After the war, he continued his service and scientific activities. Since 1947, he lived in the city of Zhukovsky in the Moscow region, where he worked at the M. M. Gromov Flight Research Institute, holding the position of deputy head of the test pilots' school.
Nikolai Ivanovich Maikov passed away on March 13, 2005. His contribution to Victory and the development of aviation remains a significant example of courage, professionalism, and devotion to the Motherland.
Today, his name continues to live on in the name of a street in Zainsk, reminding residents of the heroic past and the importance of preserving historical memory.
