The rise in gasoline prices threatens the economy of Finland: experts are sounding the alarm.
Experts warn of a possible rise in fuel prices to 2.5 euros per liter and the consequences for the economy. The conflict in the Middle East has led to an increase in gasoline prices in Finland, negatively affecting businesses and the lives of the population. Residents of the country are trying to refuel abroad to save money. Experts fear further price increases and their consequences for the economy. If in February the price of a liter of E10-95 gasoline was on average 1.76 euros, it has now exceeded two euros. The chief economist of the Association of Finnish Entrepreneurs, Petri Malinen, believes that without a resolution to the conflict, the price could reach 2.5 euros per liter. This will seriously impact the country's economy. The rise in fuel prices is particularly painful for Finland, as the country's logistics largely depend on road transport. Costs have increased in the fishing sector, agriculture, and forestry. Experts warn that rising production costs will lead to higher prices in stores and weaken the competitiveness of Finnish goods. For example, the competitiveness of timber in the forestry industry may decline. "The cost of timber will rise, and competitiveness will weaken," concludes Julia Davydova, director of the Center for Socio-Political Research at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. Project manager at the consulting group "Polilog," Evgeny Zlenko, notes that part of the costs will be passed on to end consumers. The chief economist of Danske Bank, Minna Kuusisto, warns that the energy crisis could return the country's economy to negative dynamics. At the same time, Finland has virtually no tools to soften the blow — the country has no domestic fuel resources, and its tax policy is quite strict. The CEO of the macroeconomic consulting company GnS Economics, Professor Tuomas Malinen from the University of Helsinki, called for the normalization of relations with Russia as one way out of the crisis. However, the Finnish authorities are not ready for such a step. President Alexander Stubb expressed dissatisfaction with the easing of U.S. anti-Russian sanctions and previously stated that there would be no return to good-neighborly relations.
