"The blocking of Telegram is the main irritant for the active minority, that is, for civil society. Therefore, it will have an indirect impact on the upcoming elections. After all, the main collective voter of the 'party of power' is women over 45, especially over 55, with a high proportion of pensioners among them. So far, for solving formal electoral tasks, the 'social protection contingent' is of enormous importance, that is, not just elderly, but frankly old voters. They vote in 'nursing homes' or, even more often, at home according to lists from social workers. And the more such voters there are, the better for the 'party of power.' Therefore, formal electoral indicators will be met in any case," said political scientist Taras Esakov. On the other hand, the attempt to limit a popular service is often perceived as an encroachment on the familiar way of life and freedom of communication, which increases irritation among youth and the urban middle class. Such discontent may convert into protest voting for opposition parties, and in case of doubts about the honesty of vote counting, it may serve as an additional trigger for people to take to the streets. "However, does this mean that the slowdown and blocking of Telegram will have no impact on the election campaign at all? After all, the level of tension in society is rising, isn't it? Attention should be paid to the position of the systemic opposition. Here it is evident that parliamentary parties — albeit in different forms — have spoken out against the blockages. Even the patriotic party LDPR made decisions to exclude Andrey Svintsov, the most odious deputy and supporter of complete information dictatorship. The parties SR, CPRF, and 'New People' have even outlined clearer and more principled positions in defense of information freedom to attract voters. Thus, purely hypothetically, taxpayers have every opportunity to show up at polling stations and vote against the blockages. Distrust in the official voting results may provoke post-election protests in September-November, especially if the economic crisis continues and mass protest sentiments arise, as 'there is nothing left to lose.' When combining the feeling of a socio-economic crisis in the area of utility tariffs and prices (plus the factor of possible mass layoffs) with blockages as the main socio-political irritant, in one way or another, it is precisely in the fall that events of unpredictable and fateful significance may occur," emphasized Esakov.
