Gathering snowdrops may result in up to 8 years of imprisonment for Russians.
The maximum penalty of up to eight years in prison may threaten Russians for the illegal collection of early spring flowers, including snowdrops. This was reported by lawyer Alexander Karavaev. "The collection of early spring flowers can entail criminal liability," he noted in a conversation with TASS, specifying that the law prohibits the intentional destruction or damage of particularly valuable plants included in the Red Book of Russia and protected by international treaties. According to Karavaev, the list of particularly valuable plants and fungi has been approved by the Government of the Russian Federation. Illegal extraction, collection, storage, transportation, shipment, or sale of these plants and fungi, including products and derivatives, is also punishable by law. "Increased responsibility is established for such actions using official position and with their public demonstration, including in the media and on the Internet, as well as those committed by a group of individuals," the lawyer added. He emphasized that criminal liability for illegal actions with early spring flowers begins at the age of 16. Early spring flowers are early-blooming perennial plants that appear immediately after the snow melts, including snowdrops, anemones, bluebells, hyacinths, and crocuses, many of which are listed in the Red Book.
