The debts of builders in Tatarstan have reached 272 billion.

      By March 1, 2026, the debt of builders in Tatarstan to banks for project financing had risen to 272 billion rubles. This data is provided by the statistics of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. Over the month, the debt increased by 3.1 billion rubles. Compared to March of last year, it has grown by a quarter. The republic ranks first in the Volga Federal District in terms of the volume of loans issued for housing construction. The total amount of active project financing agreements is 713 billion rubles. The number of concluded loan agreements reached 554. The balance of funds in escrow accounts for builders as of March 2026 amounted to 206 billion rubles. This is 3 billion less than a month ago and 22 billion less than a year earlier. The gap between developers' debts and the filling of escrow accounts increased by 6 billion over the month, reaching 66 billion rubles. The "National Association of Builders" (NOSTROY) warns that about 20 percent of developers may face the inability to repay loans due to a lack of funds in escrow accounts. The situation is exacerbated by rising rates for project financing. In the Volga Federal District, the average rate increased from 8.29 to 9.45 percent over the year. One-fifth of loans are serviced at rates above 16 percent. The housing market in the republic experienced stagnation in 2025. In January, the average price per square meter in new buildings in Kazan reached 253 thousand rubles. By April, it had dropped to 246 thousand, and by December, it decreased to 218.6 thousand rubles. In Tatarstan, 64 percent of the areas in new buildings remain unsold. Experts do not rule out that some companies may face financial difficulties in the near future.
