The harm of smoking to the child's body
We are concluding the series of publications by the DRKB prepared as part of the Healthy Lifestyle Promotion Week. In the third part, we will discuss the risks of smoking and vaping for children and adolescents. One of the serious threats to health remains the spread of tobacco smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes. Children and adolescents often perceive the behavior of adults as a model to imitate. If a child sees that parents or those around them smoke, they may form the idea that such a habit is acceptable. Even if a child does not smoke themselves, they may be exposed to tobacco smoke. Passive smoking poses a serious danger to health. Tobacco smoke contains many toxic substances that negatively affect the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Children who are regularly around smoking adults are more likely to suffer from respiratory diseases, bronchitis, and respiratory infections. There is also the so-called "tertiary tobacco smoke." These are harmful substances that settle on clothing, furniture, walls, and other surfaces after smoking. They can remain in the room for a long time and also negatively impact a child's health. Electronic cigarettes and vapes pose a separate danger, as they are often perceived by adolescents as a less harmful alternative to regular cigarettes. However, the liquids for such devices contain nicotine and various chemical compounds. These substances can cause addiction and negatively affect the respiratory system and the overall condition of the body. The prevention of harmful habits largely depends on the family. The personal example of parents, attentive care for health, and open dialogue with the child help to form a responsible attitude towards their body and a healthy lifestyle.
