Tatarstan is 4th in Russia in the number of space SMEs: 7% of all.
Space is not just Baikonur and Roscosmos, but also small business. The Republic of Tatarstan has entered the top 5 regions of Russia in terms of the number of small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the space industry. Tatarstan is only behind Moscow, the Moscow region, and St. Petersburg. According to the press service of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Tatarstan, the region ranked fourth in Russia in terms of the number of small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in the space sector. Tatarstan accounts for 7% of the total number of such SMEs in the country. This means that almost every fifteenth Russian small or medium business related to space operates in Tatarstan — in Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, Zelenodolsk, and other cities of the republic.
The distribution of places among the leading regions is as follows:
1. Moscow 31%
2. Moscow Region 12%
3. St. Petersburg 8%
4. Republic of Tatarstan 7%
5. Other regions 42%
Thus, three metropolitan regions (Moscow, Moscow Region, St. Petersburg) account for 51% of all space SMEs in Russia. Tatarstan is the first among regions that are not megacities and confidently leads in the Volga Federal District.
Space business in Russia: longer, more stable, more complex
A distinctive feature of small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the space industry is their age. According to the SME Corporation, the average age of such businesses is almost 9 years (specifically, 8.9 years). This is noticeably higher than the average for all SMEs in Russia, where this figure is just over 7.5 years. The difference of almost a year and a half is a significant gap for business statistics.
Why do space SMEs live longer?
Experts highlight several reasons:
- High entry threshold. Working in the space industry requires licenses, certification, and security clearances. This filters out random players.
- Long investment cycle. The development and production of space technology require years of investment; businesses get used to working for the long term.
- Government contracts. Many space SMEs are suppliers to Roscosmos, the Ministry of Defense, and Rosatom — this provides stable orders for years ahead.
- High technological culture. The industry employs seasoned engineers and managers who do not shut down businesses at the first sign of a crisis.
The oldest space SME in Russia is located in Tatarstan
A unique fact that the republic can be proud of: the most "aged" small or medium enterprise related to the space industry in Russia was founded in 1992 and operates in Tatarstan. The business is 34 years old (as of 2026). This is a true long-liver among SMEs, especially considering that the 1990s were a time of chaos rather than systematic development of space cooperation.
What does the long-lived enterprise do?
The company specializes in:
- Developing aircraft of various purposes;
- Producing aviation and space technology;
- Likely also in the modernization and repair of existing systems.
Unfortunately, the exact name of the enterprise is not disclosed (probably due to commercial or state secrecy). However, the very fact of its existence proves that Tatarstan has the personnel, traditions, and production capacities to work with space at the level of small business.
What does this mean for the economy of Tatarstan?
The fourth place in the ranking of space SMEs is not just a line of statistics. It is an indicator that a favorable environment for high-tech entrepreneurship has developed in the republic.
Three conclusions for the development of the region:
- Diversification of the economy. Tatarstan is known for petrochemicals and machine engineering. Space SMEs show that the republic is also mastering new, science-intensive niches.
- Preservation of the engineering school. The average age of space businesses is 9 years, and the oldest is 34 years. This means that there is generational continuity in Tatarstan: old enterprises have not died but have transformed into SMEs.
- Potential for growth. Tatarstan's share is 7%, while Moscow's is 31%. This is not a failure but a growth area. If the republic can attract another 3-5% of such enterprises, it will reach a clear third place.
