New flooring, lighting, and topiaries: how the Tukay Square in Yelabuga is changing

      In Yelabuga, the renovation of Tukay Square is being completed in honor of the poet's 140th anniversary. This year, the Tatar world is celebrating a significant date – 140 years since the birth of Gabdulla Tukay. The anniversary of the great poet once again reminds us of how deep and vibrant his legacy remains. In Yelabuga, the renovation of the square named after Tukay, located next to secondary school No. 1, is timed to this date. The square and the monument to the poet appeared here in 2011 when the International Organization TURKSOY declared the Year of Gabdulla Tukay in connection with the 125th anniversary. Since then, the place has become familiar and beloved by the townspeople – families stroll with children, and pedestrians relax here. Last year, a decision was made to renovate it. The work began in October of last year. During this time, builders replaced the granite tiles and paving stones at the base of the monument, updated the amphitheater – it received a new deck so that the residents of Yelabuga could sit and relax comfortably. Lighting has been installed: six spotlights, four on the amphitheater, as well as illumination of the monument itself. The head of the architecture and urban planning department of the district executive committee, Yulia Starogorodtseva, reported on the progress of the work. Before completion, the area needs to be cleaned and washed. Additionally, topiaries in the shape of Shurale and Su anasy will appear in the square – they will make the space more recognizable and will certainly attract children's attention. The place is already popular among young residents of Yelabuga, and after the renovation, the square will give parents another reason to tell their children who Gabdulla Tukay is and why he is dear to the Tatar people.

      The reconstruction is being funded by the local budget. The work is planned to be completed by the main day – the celebration of the poet's birthday on April 26.
