Red Hill 2026: what holiday is on April 19, traditions, prohibitions, and signs
The day is considered one of the best in the year for getting married. April 19 is celebrated with a holiday that has three names: Krasnaya Gorka, Fomin Sunday, and Antipascha. This is the first Sunday after Easter – a day when the church remembers the assurance of the apostle Thomas, and the folk tradition opens the wedding season. We will tell you what can and cannot be done on this day, as well as what signs our ancestors paid attention to.
Why the holiday has three names
Each of the three names reveals its meaning for this day. The name "Krasnaya Gorka" is a folk, pre-Christian term. "Krasnaya" in ancient times meant "beautiful," "festive." In Russia, on this day, young people gathered on the first thawed hills, danced in circles, and welcomed spring. Antipascha is the oldest name, appearing in the 6th century. The prefix "anti" here means not "against," but "instead of" or "similar to." Antipascha is the day that stands opposite Easter and serves as its renewal on the eighth day. Fomin Sunday is the church name associated with the biblical event remembered on this day. It refers to the assurance of the apostle Thomas, who did not believe in the resurrection of Christ until he saw Him with his own eyes.
What the biblical event reminds us of
The Gospel of John preserved for us the details of this event. On the very day of His resurrection, Christ came to the disciples gathered in one house. Thomas was not among them. When the apostles later met him and told him about the appearance of the Teacher, Thomas refused to believe. He stated that he would touch the wounds from the nails with his own hands – and only then would he believe.
Exactly one week later, on the eighth day after Easter, Christ came again to the apostles. This time Thomas was with them all. The Lord spoke directly to him: He offered him to put his fingers in the nail marks on His hands and to put his hand in the wound on His side. "Do not be unbelieving, but believing," said the Savior. Thomas replied briefly but meaningfully: "My Lord and my God!" It is thanks to this episode that the expression "Doubting Thomas" has become established in the Russian language – it is used to describe people who doubt everything. The church does not condemn the doubt of the apostle Thomas. On the contrary, it sees in his actions an example of a sincere, seeking heart that does not accept faith at face value but strives for a personal encounter with the Risen Christ. After this, Thomas gained unshakeable faith and went to preach Christianity in distant lands, where he met a martyr's death.
What is allowed to do on Krasnaya Gorka
Visit the temple. On this day, a special service is held, and a passage from the Gospel about the assurance of the apostle Thomas is read. The faithful receive communion and greet each other with the Easter greeting "Christ is risen!" – "Indeed, He is risen!"
Get married or hold a wedding. Krasnaya Gorka is the first day after Easter when the church renews the sacrament of marriage. Our ancestors believed: "Whoever marries on Krasnaya Gorka will never divorce." The day is considered one of the best in the year for getting married.
Spend time with family and loved ones. It is allowed to receive guests and set a rich table.
Wear bright clothes. The color red is especially welcomed – it symbolizes beauty and joy.
Give alms. Helping those in need or donating to the church is one of the best ways to honor this day. Refusing help on this day is not recommended.
Dance in circles and have fun. Folk tradition prescribes rejoicing and welcoming spring.
What is not allowed to do on Fomin Sunday
Visit the cemetery. The first day for commemorating the deceased after Easter is Radonitsa, which in 2026 falls on April 21.
Engage in heavy physical labor. Working in the garden and orchard is not recommended. It was believed that the earth after winter is still not ready for sowing.
Stay home alone. According to folk beliefs, anyone who spends Krasnaya Gorka at home risks remaining without a spouse or marrying an unsuitable groom.
Quarrel, argue, or curse. A conflict on this day can drag on for a long time.
Wear dark, mourning clothes. This, according to beliefs, repels luck and joy.
Lend money. It was believed that along with the money, one could also give away prosperity from the home.
Pick flowers from an apple tree. For girls, this was considered a bad omen, promising loneliness.
