A floodplain park will be established in Elabuga, the first of its kind in Tatarstan.
In Elabuga, the first floodplain park in Tatarstan, "Shishkin Meadows," will be created, with designers taking into account flooding zones during its development – currently, groundwater and meltwater are stagnating in the area, making it difficult to traverse. According to the press service of the Institute for the Development of Cities of Tatarstan, access to the floodplain park will be possible either through the "Shishkin Ponds" park or via a staircase on the slope near the Spassky Cathedral. As part of the project, the area will be cleared, the shoreline will be arranged, and groundwater drainage will be regulated through rain gardens. A path is planned to be laid along the slope near the cathedral leading to a spring. Streams and springs will be directed from the slope into a network of floodplain lakes, for which the organizers will clear the slope by the river of illegally established gardens. "The creation of convenient pedestrian paths on stilts above the flooded area is planned, which will harmoniously fit into the terrain, as well as recreation areas and birdwatching zones. Information stands and signs describing the fauna will be placed throughout the area to inform visitors," the press service describes the project.
To date, the first phase of the project has been developed, which includes preparing the area for the creation of a landscape park. In the final phase, about 500 trees, as well as over 5,000 shrubs and hydrophyte plants, will be planted. "We aim not only to solve the engineering task of water drainage but also to reveal the natural and historical potential of Elabuga by creating a unique floodplain park in the territory of the historical settlement. Thanks to the joint efforts of the Institute for the Development of Cities of Tatarstan, the administration of Elabuga, and the support of the special economic zone 'Alabuga,' the place will become a new attraction for residents and guests of Tatarstan," presented the project director of the Institute for the Development of Cities of Tatarstan, Nailya Nagumanova.
During the improvement, the designers commit to not causing harm to historical objects, not changing the hydrological regime of the area, and excluding other similar risks while restoring conditions for bird nesting. Practical stages of the project will be monitored by archaeologists. Residents of Elabuga will also be able to present their ideas for the development of the area at a public discussion on April 27.
As noted by the Institute for the Development of Cities of Tatarstan, the floodplain park will continue the concept of the already implemented improvement of the "Shishkin Ponds" park. In recent years, the descent to the ponds has been updated, trees and shrubs have been planted, piers, a children's playground, and a pump track have been built. The park's surface has also been replaced, new small architectural forms have appeared, and the lighting system has been stylized. "Shishkin Ponds" were reconstructed with a grant from the All-Russian competition for the best projects for creating a comfortable urban environment, as well as thanks to the Program for the Development of Public Spaces of Tatarstan. The floodplain park will be created by the Institute for the Development of Cities of Tatarstan in collaboration with the executive committee of the Elabuga district and with the support of the special economic zone "Alabuga."
