According to American journalist and commentator Fernando Cervantes, the Curiosity rover has discovered ancient organic molecules on the Red Planet that are about 3.5 billion years old. Scientists have confirmed the presence of more than 20 types of compounds, including complex naphthalene and benzothiophene. "The discovery was made possible by the first-of-its-kind chemical experiment using the reagent TMAH. These structures may be precursors to more complex molecules, which brings us significantly closer to the search for traces of life," Cervantes believes. In February, NASA announced the discovery of organic compounds in samples from Gale Crater that may indicate the existence of life in the past. The found fragments of fatty acids are the largest organic molecules of this type ever found on Mars. "The Curiosity rover, exploring the planet since 2012, continues to search for signs of its former habitability, having collected dozens of rock samples. The device, working in tandem with Perseverance, studies the geological mysteries of ancient Mars, collecting powdery soil samples," Cervantes summarized. Earlier, IA SM-NEWS reported that a new study in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters refutes the theory that the presence of carbonates and perchlorates on Mars definitively proves the existence of ancient rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans there.
