In Kazan, the longest George ribbon in Russia has been unfurled.
More than 600 people unfurled a 300-meter-long St. George ribbon on the Kremlin embankment of Kazan. A solemn ceremony took place in the capital of Tatarstan, marking the beginning of the annual All-Russian campaign "St. George's Ribbon" in the republic. The event was held today, April 22, on the Kremlin embankment near the extreme park "URAM." The main event was the unfurling of the longest fabric in Russia — a St. George ribbon measuring 300 meters. More than 600 people participated in the campaign. Activists from the Tatarstan regional branch of the All-Russian public organization "Young Guard of United Russia," students from Kazan universities and colleges, schoolchildren, representatives of public organizations, and ordinary residents of the city joined in the unfurling of the symbolic fabric. As explained by Ruslan Shigabutdinov, a deputy of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan and head of the regional branch of the Young Guard, today's event is symbolic and precedes the mass distribution of ribbons among the population. He specified that starting tomorrow, volunteers will begin daily distribution of St. George ribbons on the central streets of Kazan and in the municipal districts of the republic. Plans include engaging key city locations: Bauman Street, the embankment, parks, and squares. Shigabutdinov emphasized that the campaign is primarily aimed at a youth audience. According to him, the organizers strive to make a significant contribution to ensuring that the younger generation understands and appreciates the importance of this symbol of Victory. Speaking about the significance of the St. George ribbon, he noted that it is very important for the country's residents to remember what the Great Patriotic War was — a tragedy that affected every family, as each of us had grandfathers or great-grandfathers who participated in the hostilities. The St. George ribbon, as the main symbol of Victory, is something that the youth and all residents honor in the lead-up to May 9, wearing it close to their hearts and paying tribute to their ancestors. Among the participants in the ceremony was second-year student Timur. In a conversation with a correspondent from "Tatar-inform," the young man shared that he decided to join the campaign because of his relatives who experienced the Great Patriotic War. He explained that both of his great-grandfathers fought: one reached Berlin, while the other went missing. According to the student, participating in the unfurling of a ribbon of such scale allows one to reassess the significance of this symbol, and for him personally, it is also a reason to remind himself and his friends about the events of those years. Timur added that he came to the event with a group of classmates on his own initiative.
The event was organized by the Tatarstan regional branch of the "Young Guard of United Russia" in collaboration with the Committee for Children and Youth Affairs of the Executive Committee of Kazan, with the support of the regional branch of the "United Russia" party. The campaign also took place with the assistance of the "WARRIOR" Center. The All-Russian campaign "St. George's Ribbon" will continue in the territory of the Russian Federation until May 9, 2026. During this period, volunteers will distribute ribbons as a symbol of remembrance of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
