Ildar Gilmutdinov: The study of native languages in schools should not be reduced.

      In Tatarstan, efforts will be made to ensure that decisions to reduce hours for studying native languages in schools are not accepted in the future. This was stated by State Duma deputy Ildar Gilmutdinov at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Unity in Diversity: Modern Practices of Multilingual Ethnocultural Education" in Kazan. "It is unacceptable when hours for studying native languages are reduced in schools. I disagree with the recent decision to propose cutting one hour in the first grade. Why specifically the native language? It is one of the most important subjects," he said. The parliamentarian emphasized that the native language is not just a subject, "it is the history, traditions, and future of the people." Gilmutdinov reminded that 2026 has been declared the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia. According to him, over 70% of those surveyed voted for this decision. "In this difficult time, the unity of our multinational people is very important and necessary. Without respect for each other, without support for the cultures, languages, and traditions of other peoples, it is impossible to live. And the key place is occupied by language. No language – no people. Therefore, it is very important to preserve linguistic diversity; this is our heritage," he stressed. The deputy added that much is being done to preserve the languages and cultures of the peoples living in Russia. "At the federal level, all necessary tools have been adopted. Many decisions have emerged that did not exist before. And our task is to ensure that all adopted decisions are implemented in practice in the education system, at the municipal level, in culture, society, and in families. The role of the teacher here is invaluable," he noted.

      Gilmutdinov is convinced that special attention must be paid to preschool education. "Children can learn several languages at once. We will move in this direction. No matter what country the child is in, they must have the opportunity to study their native language. We must provide them with such an opportunity," he concluded.
