Vaccination Awareness Week
From April 20 to April 26, 2026, the Week of Awareness about the Importance of Vaccination for Cancer Patients is taking place (in honor of World Immunization Week on April 24). Vaccination is a simple, safe, and effective way to protect against infections, especially for people with weakened immune systems. For cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or targeted therapy, even a common infection can become life-threatening. Vaccination engages the body's natural defense mechanisms. For cancer patients, this is especially important: their immune system is often suppressed by treatment, and vaccinations (administered on time – before the start of therapy or at specific periods) help prevent severe complications. In Russia, the Federal Law "On Immunoprophylaxis of Infectious Diseases" has been adopted, which establishes the legal foundations for protecting the health of the nation. There are separate vaccination recommendations for cancer patients, taking into account the diagnosis, stage of treatment, and contraindications. Vaccination for cancer patients is carried out according to an individual plan. Special attention is paid to the prevention of influenza, pneumococcal infection, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, and other diseases. During remission and after completing immunosuppressive therapy, many vaccinations are not only possible but also strongly recommended. Today, vaccines help prevent severe infectious complications in millions of people with cancer. Thanks to timely immunization, patients can undergo treatment more safely and recover faster afterward. Everyone has the right to timely immunization, including cancer patients – of course, taking into account medical indications and under the supervision of the attending physician.
Vaccination should be carried out not only for children but also for adults, especially those who are at risk for severe infections – primarily people with cancer.
