How to protect children from ticks during spring and summer walks
With the arrival of warm weather, specialists from the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) in Russia remind parents of safety measures during the tick activity season. A few simple but effective rules can help keep little ones safe during walks.
These insects most often lurk in thickets of bushes and tall grass – exactly where children love to play. Ticks latch onto clothing and then crawl up to find an exposed area of skin. Extra caution is needed with the youngest children: they are still unsteady on their feet or often sit down on the ground. Infants are better carried in arms or transported in a stroller – this way, the child won’t end up directly in the grass, where the risk of encountering a tick is highest. When walking in the park, stay in the middle of the paths and do not approach overgrown edges closely. If you must push a stroller through a grassy area, treat its lower parts in advance with a special acaricidal spray (strictly according to the instructions). This will prevent ticks from getting onto the wheels and frame. For older children, establish a rule: do not climb into thick grass and bushes. Dress them in light, closed clothing and comfortable shoes to make it easier to spot ticks. For additional protection, items can be sprayed with acaricidal agents. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions: usually, 30–60 seconds is enough for one item. Don’t skimp, but also don’t pour too much – it’s useless and can be harmful.
After each walk, carefully inspect clothing, shoes, the stroller, and the child themselves. Don’t overlook skin folds, the area behind the ears, the neck, armpits, groin, and hairy parts of the head. If you find an attached tick or notice redness, especially if there is a deterioration in well-being – seek medical attention immediately. By following these tips, you will minimize the risk of bites and give children the joy of safe spring and summer walks.
