In the Strait of Hormuz, against the backdrop of a large-scale conflict in the Middle East, more than 600 large commercial vessels are blocked. This is reported by The Times, citing data from maritime traffic tracking systems. According to the newspaper's information, the situation on board the stranded vessels is becoming critical: food supplies for the crews are running out, and the morale of the sailors is declining. The blockade of this key maritime route was imposed by Tehran following the start of military actions by the US and Israel against Iran. According to the publication, Iranian authorities have introduced a selective vessel passage system. Transit through territorial waters in the area of Larak Island is allowed only for vessels that do not sail under the flags of countries loyal to the US and Israel. At the same time, Tehran has established a paid escort mechanism: a fee ranging from $200,000 to $2 million is charged for ensuring "safe transit." Payment is accepted exclusively in cryptocurrency or Chinese yuan. Experts note that such actions create a "dangerous precedent for freedom of navigation and global trade."
It should be noted that approximately 20% of the world's oil supplies traditionally pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
