Denis Volkov: 5 serious mistakes with seedlings that we all make

      May is the time when windowsills resemble jungles, and seedlings either delight or weep. I enter the apartment of Denis Volkov and immediately realize: a pro lives here. On three tiers of homemade shelves under grow lights, there are neat green rows. No elongated "dinosaurs," no mold on the peat.

      — What’s the most common complaint in May? — Denis pushes aside a pot with pepper and sits on a stool. — “Why are my tomato seedlings thin and pale?” And I ask: “How do you water them?” Silence. Then they admit: every day. Friends, this is not a cactus, but it’s also not rice in a swamp.

      According to Volkov, 80% of seedling problems in May stem from love. “I remember, about five years ago, a friend came over, crying: she had 60 tomato bushes wilt. I asked: did you fertilize? Oh, it starts: she watered with banana peels, yeast, and eggshells. I said: that’s how you poisoned them. Organic matter in a pot without worms turns into corpse poison.”

      Mistake #1: Overwatering at the root

      “Seedlings are not dogs — they won’t tell you they want to drink. In May, the soil in the pot should dry out at least an inch from the top. If the top is a wet swamp — expect fungus gnats and rotting. I water my peppers every 4–5 days. And only in the saucer.”

      Mistake #2: Warm windowsill without light

      “You have a radiator heating from below, but no sun — the seedlings will stretch into threads in three days. Grow lights are not a luxury. The cheapest lamps from Leroy for 500 rubles already solve the problem. The main thing is to hang them 10 cm above the tops.”

      Mistake #3: Hardening by the principle of “all or nothing”

      “People take seedlings out to the balcony for the whole day in April — and get white burns on the leaves. Hardening should start with 20 minutes, gradually. And protect from direct sunlight at noon. A burned leaf — it won’t feed the plant anymore.”

      Mistake #4: Late transplanting

      “If the roots have already wrapped around the entire clump and are coming out of the holes — the plant is stressed. Transplant peppers at the stage of two true leaves, otherwise, they will stall for a month.”

      Mistake #5: Fertilizing by eye

      “Better to underfeed than overfeed. Especially with nitrogen — lush greenery will be brittle and sweet for aphids. In May, I give potassium monophosphate (at the root) and magnesium on the leaves. Everything according to the instructions, without 'a pinch by eye.'”

      What to do right now

      — If the seedlings are stretched — bury the stem when transplanting; tomatoes can even be laid down. Peppers — bury a little, but not fanatically.

      — Yellow lower leaves are normal. But if all are yellowing — check the acidity. Watering with a spoonful of citric acid in 3 liters of water often saves the situation.

      — Before planting in the ground (3-5 days prior), spray with Epin or Zircon — this is anti-stress. The seedlings won’t notice the move.

      Denis smiles as he sees me to the door: “The most important thing is not to go crazy. Plants want to live even with clumsy gardeners. Just give them light, air, and a sense of measure. And don’t listen to grandmothers at the market — they mean well, but often make mistakes.”
