The authorities of Tatarstan plan to allocate funds for the preservation and restoration of the fortress walls of Kazan Kremlin, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the main historical jewel of the republic.
As reported on Tuesday by the press service of the Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for the protection of cultural heritage sites, approximately 800 million rubles will be allocated from the budget for the large-scale restoration and repair of four important sections of the ancient fortifications. The work will cover the so-called "pryasla" – straight sections of the fortress wall between towers, built in the 16th-17th centuries, including the first section from the Spasskaya to the Southwest Tower, the second from the Transfiguration to the Pentagonal, the third from the Pentagonal to the Nameless, and the fourth from the Nameless to the Northwest Tower. These parts of the Kremlin fortifications are truly unique and belong to different stages of the construction of the fortification ensemble: among them are fragments of the very first stone walls erected by Pskov masters in 1556-1562 immediately after the capture of Kazan, as well as later structures from the early 17th century that remember the Time of Troubles. The project includes a set of engineering and architectural measures aimed at restoring the historical appearance of the walls. Specialists will need to strengthen the foundations that have settled over the centuries, carry out major waterproofing to protect against moisture, carefully restore the dilapidated brick arches and unique combat niches – special recesses in the thickness of the walls that were used to place artillery. Special attention will be paid to recreating the historical wooden shingle roof on sturdy wooden supports: this design protected the defenders of the fortress from rain, snow, and the scorching sun in past centuries. It was previously reported that Tatarstan is preparing to release a new, the first in almost 10 years edition of the Red Book, which will be published for the first time also in the Tatar language.
