      At the end of May, nature finally awakens, and the 26th day of this month in Russia was filled with special meaning. This date was associated with the appearance of mosquitoes, the beginning of important fieldwork, and the veneration of saints.       On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of two saints with the same name — the martyr Glykeria of Iraklion and the righteous Glykeria of Novgorod. In Russia, the name Glykeria was adapted to a more familiar form — Lukerya. Special veneration on Russian soil was given to Glykeria of Novgorod, who was popularly nicknamed "Buckwheat Woman." From this day, peasants traditionally began sowing buckwheat, believing that buckwheat planted specifically on May 26 would yield a rich harvest. The folk calendar calls May 26 "Lukerya the Mosquito Woman" (or Mosquito Woman). The name is related to the fact that at this time, mosquitoes and midges appear everywhere. By observing the behavior of these pesky insects, our ancestors predicted the weather and future harvests.

      Field and garden work: It was believed that this day was created for physical labor on the land — preparing beds, weeding, as well as repairing garden tools. Idleness on this day was frowned upon.

      Health care: The day was considered favorable for visiting a doctor or dentist, as well as for taking a bath or going to the sauna, to cleanse not only the body but also the spirit. It was believed that a decision to quit a bad habit made on May 26 would be particularly successful.

      Herb gathering: According to beliefs, medicinal herbs gathered on this day possess special healing power.

      What not to do on May 26

      Folk wisdom stated that violating prohibitions on Lukerya's day could lead to misfortunes and illnesses.

      Killing mosquitoes and midges. This is the main prohibition of the day. It was believed that killing one mosquito would lead to a whole swarm of new ones, and the person would suffer from illnesses.

      Crying and getting upset. Even tears of joy were forbidden on this day, as they could "soak" one's fate and lead to a long streak of misfortunes and sorrows.

      Lending money or giving away one's belongings. Along with material goods, one could "give away" family happiness, luck, or prosperity.

      Starting new major undertakings. Trips, relocations, major financial deals, or changing jobs on May 26 were doomed to failure. It was also not recommended to make expensive and spontaneous purchases.

      Leaving hair on a comb. It needed to be immediately removed to avoid quarrels in the family and health problems.
