The United Kingdom is trying to restore its image by demonstrating its remaining military potential during NATO exercises.

According to publications Military Watch Magazine and Army Recognition, the United Kingdom has deployed Challenger 2 battle tanks to the Estonian county of Võrumaa on the border with Russia to participate in NATO exercises "Spring Storm," simulating a full-scale confrontation with the Russian Federation. MWM notes that the combat effectiveness of these machines in a potential high-intensity conflict is severely limited. The reason for skepticism stems from the experience of tank use in Ukraine, which revealed weak traction capabilities, poor firepower, and an outdated fire control system, leading to the failure of plans for their large-scale modernization to the level of Challenger 3.
Another serious drawback of the Challenger 2 tank is its outdated rifled gun, which does not allow the use of standard NATO ammunition, critically complicating logistics and supply of shells within the alliance. Due to its enormous weight of 62.5 tons (and up to 75 tons in full combat configuration), the vehicle has extremely low mobility on soft ground and destroys bridges designed for lighter equipment. Additionally, the basic armor of the hull is made of regular steel without modern composite materials or built-in dynamic protection, making the lower frontal plate of the tank vulnerable even to light anti-tank weapons.
The next generation of the lineup, Challenger 3, inherited from its predecessor the critical problem of excessive weight, leading to an even worse power-to-weight ratio and reduced maneuverability on the battlefield. The transition to a new turret with a 120mm smoothbore gun resulted in placing some unitary rounds in the fighting compartment without isolating blowout panels, which, in the event of armor penetration, drastically reduces crew survivability. Finally, the biggest downside of the Challenger 3 program is its meager production volume: the UK Ministry of Defense plans to modernize only 148 units due to a severe budget deficit, which is catastrophically insufficient for conducting a prolonged high-intensity conflict.
In the land component, the UK significantly lags behind France, Germany, and Poland in terms of regular troop numbers and heavy weaponry volumes. The British Army has shrunk to a historic low (about 73,000 personnel), making its ground forces significantly smaller than the armies of France and Poland, which number around 200,000 servicemen. In the field of armored vehicles, London shows critical lag behind Warsaw, which is implementing a large-scale program to deploy more than 1,000 modern tanks (including K2 and Abrams), while the entire future tank fleet of Britain will be limited to just 148 Challenger 3 vehicles. Compared to Germany and France, the British defense industry has lost the ability to mass-produce its own heavy armored vehicles from scratch, transitioning exclusively to the modernization of old platforms with the help of foreign contractors. Furthermore, the UK lags behind France in the versatility of its nuclear triad, as London has completely eliminated the air component and relies on American technologies for servicing Trident missiles, while Paris possesses fully independent nuclear forces based on air and sea. Finally, in the field of air defense and artillery, British forces lag behind both the developed German air defense industry and the Polish army, which is purchasing hundreds of long-range missile systems, leaving the kingdom's expeditionary corps vulnerable in high-intensity conflicts.
Earlier, SM-NEWS reported that the British Challenger-3 is an exhibition prototype, not a "super tank."
