June 7, 2026: Ivanov Day, folk signs and unusual holidays

On June 7, Orthodox Christians commemorate John the Baptist, and in the folk tradition, the day is called Ivan-Medvyanye Rosy (Ivan of the Honey Dew). We discuss the traditions, prohibitions, weather signs, and unusual holidays celebrated around the world on June 7, 2026.

      Orthodox Holiday

On June 7, the Orthodox Church celebrates the third finding of the honorable head of Saint John the Baptist and the Forerunner of the Lord. John the Baptist is the greatest of the prophets, who prepared the people for the coming of the Savior with his preaching of repentance and baptized Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan. The history of the holiday is associated with tragic events. After John's execution on the orders of King Herod, his disciples buried the prophet's body, but the head was hidden in the palace of Herodias. Later, the head was found three times — discovered and then lost again. The third finding occurred on this date. Additionally, June 7, 2026, is the Sunday of All Saints, the first Sunday after Pentecost. On this day, the church honors all God's servants — from the first martyrs to saints who lived in more recent times. The holy fathers established this holiday to show the fruits brought by the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. An important feature of this day: June 7 is the eve of the Peter's Fast, which will begin on June 8 and last until July 11. This is the last day when one can consume rich foods — milk, eggs, meat.

      Traditions of the Day

In the folk calendar, June 7 was called Ivan's Day or Ivan-Medvyanye Rosy. The name originated from the belief that from this day, "honey dews" appear on plants — a sticky liquid on leaves left by aphids and worms. Ancestors considered this dew "rusty" or "witch's" — it was believed to bring illness and rob beauty. For villagers, this day was strict. Children were strictly forbidden to run barefoot on the grass until noon to avoid stepping on harmful dew. Cows and goats were also only allowed to graze after the sun dried the grass. Otherwise, according to beliefs, the milk could spoil, and the livestock could get sick. To appease the spirits of the day and protect themselves from the "honey dews," people wore clean light or white clothing. If someone in the house fell ill, the sick person was dressed in a linen shirt — it was believed that linen helps recover faster from illness and protects against the harmful dew. Housewives on this day carefully inspected their garden beds and young plantings, paying special attention to the leaves where a sticky coating might appear. Such plants were protected from pests. According to folk tradition, on Ivan's Day, herbs were also not picked, and their healing moisture was not extracted — it was believed that from the dew of Ferapont, the grass "rusts."

What Not to Do on June 7

On June 7, there were many prohibitions, the violation of which, according to beliefs, threatened misfortunes for the next six months.

Do not walk barefoot on the dew. Especially concerning children and women — it was believed that the morning dew on this day could cause serious illness.

Do not wear black or gray clothing. Dark colors attract sadness and gloomy thoughts, which could linger all summer. It is better to wear light or white.

Do not spit on the ground. The earth was revered as a nurturer and mother of all living things. Spitting was seen as an insult, which could lead to poor harvests, livestock diseases, or family disputes.

Do not quarrel or curse. Harsh words and conflicts on this day were considered particularly destructive — they could spoil relationships for a long time and attract misfortune to the home.

Do not look at the sky immediately after leaving the house. Peasants believed that if you first raised your eyes to the sky, you could bring misfortune for the entire day. It is better to look around first and focus on your tasks.

Do not start new ventures or important projects. The day was considered unsuitable for starting serious undertakings — any new endeavor would not bring success or would require excessive effort.

Do not sweep the floors or do general cleaning. It was believed that this could "sweep" away prosperity, peace, and family happiness from the home. Along with the dirt, luck and well-being would leave.

Do not throw out trash in the evening. Along with unnecessary things, peace and prosperity could leave the house. Taking out the trash in the evening could attract quarrels and financial difficulties into the family.

Lovers should not stand or sit by the fence — according to an old belief, this threatens separation or parting. It is also not recommended to refuse help to those in need — this could lead to one's own difficulties.

      Weather Signs

If there is abundant dew in the morning — expect a warm and fruitful summer. "Without dew, the grass does not grow," people used to say.

If there is no dew in the morning and it is immediately hot — expect rain after lunch.

      A sharp thunder — indicates a downpour.

Frogs are silent — expect a cold snap.

Bees buzz around flowering rowan — expect clear and sunny weather.

A rooster crows early — expect rain.

The bird cherry is blooming — soon the first birch mushrooms will appear in the forest.

Many flowers on the rowan — expect a good oat harvest.

Late blooming of rowan — indicates a long and protracted autumn.

If birds build nests on the sunny side of the house — summer will be cool.

Swallows fly low over the ground — expect rain in the coming days.

Ants are actively building anthills — autumn will be early and cold.

A bright red dawn — indicates windy weather.

      Unusual Holidays in the World

World Food Safety Day. This international holiday was established by the United Nations to draw attention to the importance of safe food. Millions of people suffer from illnesses caused by poor-quality food each year, and this day serves as a reminder of the need to adhere to hygiene standards from farm to table.

Sailors' Day in Iceland. The holiday is celebrated on the first Sunday of June. Fishing has always been of great importance to this island nation. On this day, the best sailors are awarded medals and certificates, festive lunches are held, and then a real maritime festival begins — with sailing races, swimming competitions, and rescue drills. The festival is invariably accompanied by gifts from the sea — fish, whale meat, and shrimp.

Crowdfunding Day. An unofficial holiday dedicated to collective fundraising for creative, scientific, and social projects. This day was first celebrated in 2015, and since then it has become popular among startup authors, musicians, inventors, and everyone who believes in the power of crowdfunding.
