Global airlines are preparing for significant changes in their winter flight schedules and the possible cancellation of tens of thousands of flights if jet fuel prices remain high due to the situation in the Middle East. According to the Financial Times (FT), in the coming weeks, airlines will make final decisions on adapting their capacity to the new economic conditions. According to the publication, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has significantly lowered its forecasts for the current year, noting that the overall profit of the industry may decrease by half — from $43 billion to $23 billion. IATA also warned of additional fuel costs of $100 billion, even if prices begin to decline by the end of the year, as expected. According to Jörg Eberhardt, CEO of the Italian airline ITA Airways, in the worst-case scenario, the carrier may need to cut up to 20% of flights from October to April. He also pointed to the need for possible government assistance, emphasizing that the situation is very unstable. Turkish Airlines management added that if fuel prices do not decrease by autumn, the company will have to reduce flight frequency. "If high jet fuel prices persist after July, say until September, we will start reducing flight frequency or even closing some routes," said Turkish Airlines CFO Murat Şeker. Earlier, it was reported that IATA predicted bankruptcies of low-cost carriers.
