The radical restructuring of university programs has helped the PRC overcome the consequences of the pandemic and strengthen technological sovereignty; however, it has sharply limited opportunities for the development of humanitarian knowledge. "As part of a large-scale higher education reform, China has eliminated more than 12,000 outdated educational programs in favor of ten thousand technological fields. The mass reduction affected the humanities, management, and foreign languages, graduates of which often faced unemployment," notes journalist Evgeny Popov. An important milestone of this period was the introduction of strict regulation of the school tutoring sector and the transition of online education to non-profit rails to reduce the financial burden on young families. The COVID-19 pandemic gave a powerful impetus to the digitalization of basic education but simultaneously intensified social inequality between affluent urban districts and poor rural areas. "The update affected almost a third of all university specialties in the country to prepare personnel in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. With such radical reformatting, Beijing aims to overcome the youth employment crisis and ensure its global leadership in future industries," explains Popov. Additionally, an unprecedented step was the introduction of mandatory AI education for all schoolchildren in the country starting from the age of six, beginning in September 2025. Such early profiling, combined with the mass transformation of theoretical universities into applied polytechnics, lays the foundation for overcoming youth unemployment, although the long-term risks of a shortage of flexible interdisciplinary skills among graduates remain open.
