Former State Duma deputy and iconic figure of the 90s Sergey Shashurin has died.
At the age of 69, former State Duma deputy Sergey Shashurin has died. This was reported by "BUSINESS Online." Shashurin headed the "Tan" association and was elected president of Tatarstan in the 2000s. Shashurin was born in the village of Nizhnie Vyazovye in the Zelenodolsk district of Tatarstan. In 1985, he graduated from the Kazan Engineering and Construction Institute (industrial and civil construction). By the early 90s, Shashurin, along with friends, created and headed the Kazan Association for Socio-Economic Development "Tan," which owned branches and enterprises of various profiles across the country. According to some reports, over 300 companies joined "Tan" during its four years of existence, and Shashurin's barter chains stretched from Nakhodka to Kaliningrad. Thanks to his commercial successes, Shashurin became a sponsor of several sports teams. For example, the football club "Rubin" was called "Rubin-Tan" from 1992 to 1993. "When the club was bought by Shashurin, everything was good for us, but then the hardest times came," said former "Rubin" footballer Rustem Khuzin to "BUSINESS Online."
Shashurin's career nearly ended in October 1993 when he was detained by FSB officers for transporting several trucks of fuel and food to deputies of the Supreme Soviet, besieged in the Russian government. He was later transferred to a Kazan prison, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tatarstan accused the businessman of fraud and embezzlement (according to the investigation, Shashurin embezzled 712 trucks from KAMAZ). In 1995, Shashurin was elected a deputy of the State Council of Tatarstan, was released in July, and by the end of the year became a deputy of the State Duma of the second convocation. Four years later, he became the deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Ecology. In March 2001, Shashurin ran for the presidency of Tatarstan but only received 5.78% of the votes. In 2003, he was removed from the elections for "bribing voters."
In 2005, he was found guilty of defaming the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tatarstan and embezzling over 30 million rubles worth of products from OJSC "Tatarkhlebprodukt." As a result, Shashurin received a sentence of 2 years and 8 months in a settlement colony.
