The East of Germany will increase protest potential against the backdrop of pension reform.

Photo: IA SM-News June 24 – IA SM.News. The German authorities are considering a phased increase in the retirement age to 70 years to save the social security system from collapse. Chancellor Friedrich Merz supported this initiative, and an expert commission proposed linking the retirement age to life expectancy. The government plans to approve the changes before the start of the July holidays, despite warnings about the decline in citizens' real incomes. However, disagreements over the bill have already brought the ruling coalition to the brink of collapse and triggered large-scale protests from the population. Disagreements over pension reform between the conservative CDU/CSU bloc of Friedrich Merz and the center-left SPD are exacerbating internal divisions that could lead to early elections and the fall of the government. In the event of the current coalition's collapse, potential options for a new coalition could include an alliance of conservatives with the Greens and Free Democrats ("Jamaica") or a return to a classic "grand coalition" under updated terms. The rise in electoral support for the far-right "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) amid this crisis may also force traditional parties to seek new compromise formats. The main hotspots for strikes and demonstrations have become major industrial centers and metropolises such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Frankfurt am Main, where trade unions traditionally hold strong positions. The eastern federal states (former GDR) — Brandenburg, Saxony, and Thuringia — have the greatest potential for expanding protests. In these regions, the income levels of the population are historically lower, and dissatisfaction with the central government's policies and support for opposition forces (such as AfD and the Left Party) are traditionally high. Traditional automotive and industrial regions in the west of the country (for example, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia) also risk being engulfed by mass strikes of workers whose unions categorically reject the abolition of early retirement.

Earlier, IA SM-NEWS reported that Germany would not participate in the creation of new fighters.
