Nigmatulina is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As Forbes reported, she was previously a lead analyst at an American company where she managed projects personally funded by Gates. Later, she returned to Russia and from 2012 to 2015 held the position of first deputy and then acting director of the Moscow General Plan Institute.
