Gardening as therapy: why I choose garden beds over urban hustle.
Fresh vegetables are just the tip of the iceberg. For me, the earth has become a place of power, where every green blade of grass heals the soul, and experiments with plants bring the joy of discovery.
Beds that heal
Often, people perceive gardening as a heavy obligation or a way to save on groceries. For me, it’s entirely different. The plot is a living organism with which I communicate without words. I come here not just to weed or water, but to restore my inner balance. The earth absorbs worries in a remarkable way and returns them as tranquility. When my fingers touch the moist soil and a warm breeze blows on my face, all problems suddenly cease to seem so global. The season begins long before the first greenery. In winter, I sort through seeds, draw planting plans, and dream about how my beds will look in July. There is a special magic in this anticipation.
A vegetable basket and a green oasis
Of course, I also grow the classic set: onions, carrots, beets, potatoes, cucumbers with tomatoes, and various types of cabbage. This is a reliable rear that feeds my family all summer and autumn. But my true pride is the greens. I adore arugula for its nutty sharpness, spinach for its tenderness, and cilantro and parsley adorn every dish. Mint and lemon balm grow separately—they are used not only in tea but also in summer lemonades. I also have chard, which is as beautiful as flowers and more beneficial than many salads.
Flower beds and bold experiments
Vegetables are functional, but flowers are music. Asters—bright and festive—make you smile even on a cloudy day. Lilies and daylilies create vertical accents and smell so good that neighbors take notice. I consciously plant flower beds among the vegetable rows because beauty should be everywhere. A separate passion is unusual crops. Sunberries with their black berries and physalis in paper lanterns spark curiosity among all guests. They are not only decorative but also useful. This year, I plan to add something new—perhaps edible flowers.
Returning to the roots
Perhaps the main thing that gardening gives me is a sense of continuity. I remember my grandmother's hands, her advice on when to sow and how to care for plants. In these movements lies age-old wisdom that never goes out of style. I am not just growing a harvest; I am preserving a tradition. And that is priceless. The garden has become a place for me where time slows down, and the heart fills with quiet joy. Here, every leaf, every bud reminds me of how beautiful life is in its simple manifestations. And I am happy that I can share this joy with my loved ones and even with those who simply pass by my beds.
