In Kazan, the most acute shortage of specialists in the transport sector is observed in Tatarstan. As reported by the Minister of Transport and Road Economy of the Republic of Tatarstan, Farit Khamitov, the staff shortage in the capital of the republic exceeds 30%. Due to the staffing issue in the region, further implementation of a conductor-free fare payment system is being considered. However, Khamitov noted a significant downside to such a solution — the possible decrease in payment collection.
The minister also announced plans for the digitalization of public transport. Authorities intend to equip all passenger transport with passenger flow counting sensors. Currently, only two municipalities have achieved the target indicators: Naberezhnye Chelny (transport is fully equipped) and the Zelenodolsky district (80%). The model from Chelny is planned to be spread throughout the republic. Another project is the introduction of a unified ticket for all types of public transport. Its launch will begin after the emergence of a single operator for passenger transportation in Tatarstan. When this will happen, Khamitov did not specify. At the same time, plans are in place to integrate a unified platform for fare payments.
In addition, all necessary permits have been obtained for the extension of the high-speed highway (VSM) to Kazan. It will become part of the route Moscow — Nizhny Novgorod — Kazan with the prospect of further network development in the eastern direction.
In Kazan, from the summer of 2024, the conductor-free system will already be partially used. At that time, all trams and trolleybuses were transferred to it. After that, the experiment was extended to several bus routes with a small passenger flow — No. 29, 26, 72, and 75. In "Metroelektrotrans," it was reported that in 2025 this format allowed saving 371 million rubles. The funds were directed to increase employee salaries, repair equipment, and develop transport infrastructure. At the same time, the number of fare evaders did not increase.
