How to choose fertilizers for the garden: a brief guide

Let's figure out what types of fertilizers exist, what they are needed for, and whether to trust "folk" recipes from the home medicine cabinet.       Main types of fertilizers and their purpose

      Organic fertilizers are natural sources of nutrition that also improve soil structure:

      Compost and humus. Universal fertilizers rich in nitrogen and trace elements. Ideal for application in the fall under digging or in the spring in holes.

      Manure. Contains a lot of nitrogen, but should only be used well-rotted: fresh manure can "burn" roots and become a source of weed seeds and pathogens.

      Wood ash. A source of potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. Excellent for acidic soils, as well as for feeding tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage. It should not be mixed with nitrogen fertilizers — this reduces their effectiveness.

      Herbal infusions. For example, a nettle brew is a budget-friendly way to provide plants with quick nitrogen and trace elements.

      Mineral fertilizers act quickly and precisely, as they contain specific elements in known concentrations:

      Nitrogenous (urea, ammonium nitrate) — stimulate the growth of green mass. They are applied in spring when plants start to grow.

      Phosphorus (superphosphate) — important for root system development and bud formation. They work better when applied in the fall.

      Potassium (potassium sulfate, potassium chloride) — increase disease resistance and improve fruit quality. Potassium is especially needed during flowering and fruiting.

      Complex (azofoska, nitroammophoska) — contain several elements at once. Convenient if there is no time to select individual components.

      Organomineral and humic fertilizers combine organic and mineral components, often including humates, which improve nutrient absorption and stimulate root formation.

      Pharmaceutical "fertilizers": what really works and what is a myth

      Many gardeners use pharmaceutical preparations as fertilizers and protective agents. Some of them are indeed useful, but it is important to understand that they are not full-fledged fertilizers, but most often — biostimulants or antiseptics.

      Potassium permanganate. A weak pink solution is used for seed treatment and soil disinfection. In microdoses, it serves as a source of potassium, but is not suitable as a main fertilizer.

      Boric acid. Important for fruit setting: spraying with a solution (1 g per 10 liters of water) increases the yield of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and strawberries.

      Succinic acid. A biostimulant: helps plants survive stress (transplanting, heat, cold) and improves root formation. The solution is prepared according to the instructions — usually 1–2 g per 10 liters of water.

      Hydrogen peroxide. A weak solution (2 tbsp. per 1 liter of water) is used for seed treatment and watering seedlings: it saturates the soil with oxygen and suppresses pathogenic microflora.

      Ammonium alcohol (ammonia solution). A source of available nitrogen. Suitable for emergency feeding when signs of nitrogen starvation appear (pale leaves, weak growth). Dosage — 3 tbsp. per 10 liters of water; apply carefully to avoid damaging roots.

      Important: pharmaceutical agents do not replace full-fledged plant nutrition. They are used selectively, strictly following the dosage — excess can be harmful.

      How to choose fertilizer for the task

      For seedlings. Balanced compositions with an emphasis on nitrogen and phosphorus are needed: they stimulate root and leaf growth. Complex fertilizers marked "for seedlings" or a weak solution of urea and superphosphate will work.

      For tomatoes and peppers. During flowering and fruit setting, plants require potassium and phosphorus. Potassium sulfate, herbal infusions, and foliar feeding with boric acid work well.

      For cucumbers. They love nitrogen in the early stages, and during fruiting — potassium and magnesium. You can alternate herbal infusion with potassium sulfate.

      For root vegetables (carrots, beets). Excess nitrogen leads to "hairiness" and deterioration of taste. It is better to focus on phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.

      For cabbage. Requires a lot of nitrogen and calcium. Well-rotted manure, compost, calcium nitrate, and ash to reduce acidity and protect against clubroot will work.

      Practical tips for applying fertilizers

      Do not exceed the dosage. Excess fertilizers are more dangerous than their deficiency: they cause root burns, nitrate accumulation, and deterioration of fruit taste.

      Consider soil acidity. For example, on acidic soils, it is not advisable to apply ammonium nitrate — it further acidifies the soil. For such areas, it is better to choose nitrate forms of nitrogen or lime the soil.

      Observe timing. Nitrogen — in spring, phosphorus and potassium — throughout the season and in the fall. Foliar feeding (on the leaf) works faster, but should be done early in the morning or in the evening to avoid burns.

      Combine organic and mineral fertilizers. Organic improves soil structure, while mineral fertilizers provide quick effects. This approach allows maintaining fertility for many years.

      Remember: there is no universal fertilizer "for everything." The best result comes from an individual approach: analyzing the condition of plants, considering soil type and crop needs. Use fertilizers consciously — and your garden will surely delight you with a rich harvest.
