       Against the backdrop of Russia and China extending the visa-free regime until the end of 2027 and the reorientation of tourist flows due to the conflict in the Middle East, the Republic of Tatarstan is actively ramping up efforts to attract guests from the Celestial Empire, adapting infrastructure and services for them.

      

       According to materials from RBC Tatarstan, in 2025, 20,000 tourists from China registered in collective accommodation facilities in the region, and bookings for the three summer months of 2026 soared by 65 percent year-on-year. According to experts, guests from the PRC are mainly focused on cultural and educational tourism, and their routes coincide with the classics: the Kazan Kremlin and the island-city of Sviyazhsk are undeniable hits, but there is also a particular interest in places associated with Lenin's name, as well as the authentic atmosphere of the Old Tatar Sloboda and river cruises on the Volga. For the convenience of tourists, there is already an information portal in Chinese in the city, accredited guide-translators are working, and active implementation of audio guides in Chinese is planned in museums. The main limiting factors for explosive growth in tourist flow remain logistics and the issue of familiar payment methods: in the overwhelming majority of regions in Russia, it is impossible to pay through Alipay and WeChat Pay, and UnionPay cards are declined due to existing sanctions, so the Chinese bring cash yuan or obtain prepaid cards. The Russian Union of the Tourism Industry notes a sharp increase in the share of individual tourists and predicts that the main effect of extending the visa-free regime will be noticeable in the fall when bookings for the next year are made, and under a favorable scenario, the number of visits from China could increase by 27-35 percent by the end of 2026. It was previously reported that Tatarstan demonstrated impressive growth in the supply of agricultural products and food to the People's Republic of China in the first half of 2026, significantly exceeding the figures for the same period last year.
