What not to do on August 15, 2026
On this day, Orthodox Christians remember the first martyr Stephen, while folk traditions intertwine with weather signs and amusing modern holidays.
Orthodox holiday
On August 15, the Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Stephen the First Martyr, who was the eldest among the seven deacons chosen by the apostles for service. He preached in Jerusalem, cared for the poor and orphans, for which he met a martyr's death by stoning. This day also commemorates Blessed Basil, the Moscow miracle worker, after whom the cathedral on Red Square is named.
Day traditions
In the folk calendar, this date is called Stephen Senoval — by this time, haymaking was completed, and peasants stacked hay into mounds for winter feed for livestock. The main traditions of the day included:
Weaving the "Stephen's wreath." Girls and women collected 12 herbs — chamomile, mint, St. John's wort, clover, yarrow — and wove them into a talisman, which was hung in the red corner of the house. It was believed to protect the health of the household members until spring, and in case of illness, twigs from the wreath were brewed as medicine.
Honoring horses. Saint Stephen was considered the patron of these animals. Horses were bathed, their manes were combed, decorated with ribbons, and they were watered "through silver" — a silver coin was thrown into a spring, and then the animal was watered from a hat, where another coin was also placed. The coin was hidden in the stable as a talisman for the whole year.
Washing with "silver" water. Girls washed their faces with water containing a silver coin to preserve youth and beauty.
What not to do
This day is associated with many prohibitions, the violation of which, according to beliefs, could bring misfortune:
Offending animals — it is forbidden to beat livestock, kick dogs and cats, as well as hunt or even set mouse traps. It was believed that cruelty to animals turns away luck.
Borrowing or lending money and food — this could lead to prolonged financial problems and even hunger.
Quarreling and swearing — any evil word spoken on this day, like a boomerang, returns and spoils relationships with loved ones.
Working hard and overexerting oneself — it was believed that exhausting labor would lead to illness.
Also, on this day, the restrictions of the Assumption Fast apply: it is forbidden to eat meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs.
Weather signs

Unusual holidays around the world
On August 15, there are also unofficial but quite curious holidays:
The Festival of Amertat and the Fire of Kings in Zoroastrianism. This day is dedicated to Immortality, creativity, and love. It is symbolically connected with the plant world and "living" water, which fills with life force. On this holiday, 19 lights are lit.
The Durian Festival in Dak Lak (Vietnam) — a grand gastronomic event that will last from August 15 to September 2. The program includes a parade of 500 pickups (claiming a Guinness record), an auction of elite durians, a festival of dishes made from this "king of fruits," and a show with traditional rituals of local ethnic groups.
