A one-year-old girl was admitted to the surgical department No. 2 of the Children's Republican Clinical Hospital (DRKB). The child choked on a sunflower seed, which got stuck in the right main bronchus.
As explained by the head of the department, Niyaz Amerkhanov, for a child of this age, any foreign body in the airways poses a deadly danger. The diameter of the bronchi in infants is only a few millimeters — even a small seed can completely block the lumen and cause respiratory arrest.
Doctors urgently performed bronchoscopy — a minimally invasive procedure that allows the removal of a foreign object through the natural airways without incisions. The intervention was successful. The girl is currently under medical supervision. Her condition is stable, and her life is not in danger.
