“Is that you in the photo?” is one of the common scam tactics.

      A 37-year-old local resident who became a victim of such a scheme contacted the duty unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Chistopolsky District. She told the investigator that she had received a message in a messaging app from an acquaintance asking, “Look, is that you in the photo?” with a link. After following the link, the woman began receiving notifications about overdue loan payments from various microfinance organizations. Checking her credit history, she found several loans taken out in her name in the amounts of 30,000, 6,550 and 8,970 rubles.

      The investigation established that a malicious APK link allowed the fraudsters to hack the victim’s phone, install a remote access program and take out microloans through her personal account on the Gosuslugi government services portal.

      That same day a 46-year-old resident of Chistopol contacted the duty unit with a similar report. He, too, was curious whether he was depicted in the photo and followed a link sent by an acquaintance. As a result, he discovered that a microloan of 10,000 rubles had been taken out in his name.

      The investigative department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Chistopolsky District has opened criminal cases in both incidents under Article 272 Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Unauthorized access to computer information) and Article 159 Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Fraud).

      Police officers strongly recommend that citizens remain vigilant and not follow suspicious links sent by strangers or even acquaintances in messaging apps and social networks.
